September Care for Centipede Lawns

Centipede lawns continue to require care this month. Follow these helpful tips for a healthy lawn now and to ensure proper growth in the spring:

Mowing

  • Continue to mow centipede grass at normal mowing height throughout September and until the weather starts to cool with nighttime temperatures falling below 70º F.

  • Once temperatures cool, raise the mower blade height to approximately two inches to allow for more leaf surface to remain and become acclimated to the cooler temperatures before the first frost.

Fertilization

  • Do not apply nitrogen at this time.

  • Test soil to determine nutrient needs and apply lime or sulfur if needed.

Irrigation

  • If rainfall levels are low, continue to water the lawn regularly to prevent drought stress.

  • After lawn has become dormant, water as needed to prevent excessive dehydration.

Insect & Disease Control

  • Apply an insecticide to reduce the population of bugs and insects if needed.

  • Treat lawns with fungicide this month, especially if there is excessive rainfall. Keeping lawns disease-free in the fall will strengthen its growth in the spring.

Weed Control

  • Manage winter annual grassy and broadleaf weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide this month, followed by a second applications 8-10 weeks later.

  • Follow label directions to determine correct application and watering practices.

Remember, the Clemson Extension service is an excellent resource for soil testing and assistance with specific lawn and garden questions in our region.
